Kitimat welcomes LNG Canada Phase 2 expansion decision

The District of Kitimat is welcoming LNG Canada’s decision to proceed with its Phase 2 expansion.

LNG Canada announced Tuesday that its joint venture partners had made a final investment decision on the project, which would expand the facility in Kitimat.

Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth said the District has worked closely with LNG Canada from the early planning stages through construction of Phase 1 and now into operations.

“Today’s announcement continues to strengthen our relationship, supporting a development that brings employment to the region and contributes to the growth of our community, province and nation at large,” Germuth said.

The Phase 2 expansion was selected in September 2025 as one of the first nation-building projects referred to the federal Major Projects Office.

The District said the project’s importance was further highlighted through an enhanced investment co-operation agreement between the federal and provincial governments announced in 2026.

Kitimat is also home to the Haisla-led Cedar LNG project, which is currently under construction.

The District said Phase 1 construction, the Phase 2 expansion decision and Cedar LNG represent tens of billions of dollars in projects in the community.
