LNG Canada sponsorship advances plans for Eco Depot recycling facility in Kitimat

Plans for a new Eco Depot recycling and waste diversion facility in Kitimat are moving forward thanks to a $5-million sponsorship from LNG Canada.

The District of Kitimat said the sponsorship is one of the largest single community investments of its kind from LNG Canada and will help with planning for the facility.

The Eco Depot itself would provide opportunities to share, repair and reuse items, while offering education on waste reduction.

“An Eco Depot in Kitimat will give the community a resource to extend the life of items which might otherwise end up in our landfill,” said Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth.

“This sponsorship from LNG Canada goes a long way to make this facility come to life.”

The District is currently developing the full scope of services the Eco Depot could provide, with construction envisioned to take place within the next three years.

LNG Canada Chief Corporate Relations Officer Tara Barnett explained that the company’s investment is intended to support community priorities and provide long-term benefits.

“LNG Canada’s $5 million sponsorship in this initiative reflects our commitment to supporting projects that respond to community priorities and deliver lasting benefits. We are proud to partner with the District of Kitimat on an initiative that will enhance local recycling and waste diversion services while helping support a cleaner, more sustainable future for the community.”

The District noted that the project builds on other recent improvements to Kitimat’s waste management system.

An organics facility at the Kitimat Landfill opened in 2025 with funding from LNG Canada. The facility is now producing compost that the District uses in public gardens and parks.

Since 2022, Kitimat’s curbside collection program has also expanded to include yard waste, food waste, and recycling alongside regular garbage collection.

The District said the Eco Depot would provide another way to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill while giving residents more opportunities to reuse and extend the life of unwanted items.
