Residents across Terrace and Kitimat are being urged to take precautions after Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a heat warning for the region.
The heat warning is currently in effect until Wednesday and also covers Bella Coola and the Sunshine Coast.
Environment Canada states that a high-pressure ridge is expected to bring daytime highs into the low 30s and nighttime temperatures staying in the mid-teens. The hot weather may persist up until Wednesday before cooling starts in the later part of the week.
With the hot conditions comes a greater risk to health and safety, particularly for people who are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
Those at greater risk include seniors, individuals living alone, those who have existing health conditions like diabetes, heart or lung disease, people with mental illnesses, substance abuse problems, substance use disorders, and anyone with limited mobility.
To remain safe from overheating and dehydration, residents are advised to make sure their homes remain cool as much as possible with air conditioners if available, or by pulling down curtains or blinds and moving to a cooler place like a basement or a cooling centre.
Officials also note that although fans could be helpful in bringing cooler outside air inside, they won’t reduce one’s core body temperature on their own, especially for elderly individuals. People who feel symptoms of heat illnesses are advised to move to a cooler place immediately.
