LNG Canada says development work is continuing on a potential second phase of its export facility in Kitimat.
The company has released updates stating that Coastal Gaslink is looking into ways of increasing their current pipeline capacity to deliver more natural gas as part of the next phase of expansion.
According to project representatives, the expansion will not require building another pipeline. Rather, it would involve adding compressors to five sites on the current Coastal GasLink pipeline, as well as upgrades to existing facilities such as the Kitimat Meter Station and LNG Link Meter Station.
“At the direction of LNG Canada, Coastal GasLink is exploring options for potential expansion, which would increase the capacity of Coastal GasLink to enable delivery for LNG Canada Phase 2,” the company said.
Current work is focused on scope refinement, engineering, permitting requirements, financial evaluation, and consultations with Indigenous Nations along the pipeline route.
According to LNG Canada, the second phase is currently in the development process and no investment decision has been made yet.
The new phase will provide more volumes of natural gas transported to the export site, which will enable an increased production and export of liquefied natural gas.
Any future expansion will still require regulatory and environmental approvals.
The first phase of LNG Canada started producing liquefied natural gas at the export terminal in Kitimat in 2025. The second phase had been considered for some time as a possibility of increasing the production capacity of the plant.
