BC Coroners Service investigating death of snowmobiler in Haines Pass

A missing snowmobiler has died near Haines Pass, about 1,200 kilometres northwest of Prince George.

Atlin RCMP said three snowmobilers were attempting to retrieve a broken-down snowmobile in northwestern B.C., near the Yukon border, when one of them became separated from the group Friday.

Due to treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility, rescue efforts were limited.

A break in the weather Sunday allowed a helicopter crew and a snowmobile team to access the area where the missing person was believed to be.

Several hours later, searchers located the missing person about four kilometres from his last known location. He was found dead.

The BC Coroners Service is leading the investigation.
