Kitimat council adopts 2026 financial plan and tax bylaws

The District of Kitimat has officially adopted its 2026 five-year financial plan and tax bylaws ahead of the May. 15 provincial deadline.

Council voted Monday night to adopt the Five-Year Financial Plan Bylaw, the 2026 Tax Rate Bylaw, and the Residential Flat Rate Tax Amendment Bylaw.

Based on the district, this year’s financial plan is set to include a 4.79 per cent property tax increase from last year.

In the Community Charter, municipalities must adopt a financial plan and an annual property tax bylaw before May. 15 of every year.

In addition, the financial plan outlines the five-year financial priorities of the district while the tax rate bylaw will set out the tax rates to be charged for revenue collection by the district and other agencies such as BC Transit, Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, and Northwest Regional Hospital District.

While discussing the issue, councillors again brought up the issue of funding problems faced by some community organizations, such as the Kitimat Public Library, which was later awarded $6,500 in extra funding.

Council also approved the Residential Flat Rate Tax Amendment Bylaw, which sets the 2026 residential flat tax at $800.
