With the temperatures rising in some parts of northwest B.C., that means that camping season is just on the horizon.
The District of Kitimat has now officially opened reservations for its municipal campgrounds, inviting residents and visitors to plan their summer vacation.
Campers can now make reservations for Radley Park and Hirsch Creek Park again. These are two popular campsites that draw a variety of users, both local and out-of-town visitors. The online reservation system, which has become available in recent years, continues to make it easier for users to make reservations for campsites. This gets rid of the uncertainty of first-come, first-served camping.
Interest in the district’s campsites was high last season. According to Shaun O’Neill, Deputy Director for Leisure Services, more than 3,000 visitors stayed at the sites throughout the 2025 season, accounting for roughly 1,400 individual reservations.
The campgrounds have seen a variety of visitors, with 60 percent being from outside the area and 40 percent from Kitimat, Terrace, and surrounding districts. Visitors have traveled from different parts of northern B.C., including Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, and some have even traveled from outside the country.
Despite the wetter-than-normal weather conditions faced during the last camping season, it was still considered a success. O’Neill noted that the reservation system has helped provide campers with increased reassurance that a campsite will be available for them.
Bookings for the season have now been made available, and it is anticipated that it will once again be a busy season as people look for ways to make the most of the various recreational opportunities in northwest B.C.
