Water quality advisory issued for District of Kitimat

A Water Quality Advisory has been issued for the District of Kitimat as of Friday, Oct. 24, following elevated turbidity in the Kitimat River.

According to the district, residents are advised by Northern Health to take precautions, especially those in the higher-risk groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. These groups are recommended to drink only boiled water until further notice.

All owners of public facilities are required to inform their customers of the notice, which will remain in effect until the District has been advised by a Drinking Water Officer to amend or cancel it. Authorities say they are working with Northern Health to address the matter.

A Water Quality Advisory is issued when there is a noticeable change in water quality or a manageable risk to drinking water. It is less severe than a boil water notice, but still a higher level of concern, particularly for those in vulnerable groups.

Residents are asked to stay informed through the official District of Kitimat website and social media for notification on when the advisory will be lifted.
